Rapid Rehabilitation

In both the USA and Europe programs to combine surgical technique, anaesthetic techniques, and rehabilitation post surgery have been used to allow patients to mobilise ON the day of surgery. I have now completed evaluating this technique in both my total hip and total knee replacement patients. Over 75 patients have now undergone this technique at both the Yale hospital, Wrexham and the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital.

During surgery the hip or knee joint is infiltrated with a combination of local anaesthetic and adrenalin. This helps minimise blood loss and reduces the need for a drain after surgery. Pain relief is augmented with oral pain killers. Since there is less nausea and sickness post operatively eating and drinking can start almost immediately in most cases.

Later on the same day following surgery patients can mobilise with the help of trained nursing staff or a physiotherapist. Either a few steps or 50 yards, all helps overall recovery, pain relief and allows earlier return home and to normal activities.
